Being a Butt...

of jokes is so much fun.

Here is my story of stupidity for today...

A young girl came to watch the kids so I could get out of the house and study a bit. So I flagged down a minibus. Minibuses are about the size of the short school buses, with flat fronts and seats down only one side and the other side is standing room. They go along a set route, but you can get on and off anywhere. They should carry about 25 people and therefore usually carry 40-45! Ummm... closeness. The summer is my favorite- our sweat runneth over and into a river down the aisle.

I digress...

So, I was on the minibus right next to the door, riding happily along enjoying my brief taste of freedom. A man came up behind me and yelled, "where are you from?". Startled, I turned and said "I am American!" sort of loudly. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. Then the minibus stopped and the man got off.

At that point I realized he didn't ask me where I was from, he was telling the driver to let him him off "where ever." And then some crazy lady [me] turned around and shouted, "I am an American!" at him. No wonder people were staring at me! Language learning is so fun!!!

I do not care what language someone speaks, if they don't have any teeth it is nearly impossible to understand them!

F-L-E-X-I-B-L-E

UGH!!! I am learning to be flexible. I knew coming into this line of work that the #1 thing I needed was love for the Lord, and the #2 thing was flexibility. That is super hard for someone as ...um... particular as me. I like things a certain way. I think through my day and schedule things in a way that will best suit the kids. In other words, I plan, plan, plan! So when things don't go according to plan I try my best to be calm, but it is hard. Yes, ask my family, it is HARD to live with me!!

Anyhow, we have new team members arriving tonight. A family that has been in another part of the country for 2 years, and is now transitioning onto our team and into working with the poor. They have two young girls. One is Lucy's age and the other is 3 months old.

They are arriving tonight on a plane and staying with us until their flat is set up. Just a few days. So, I have spent the day cleaning. I was almost finished, except for the kitchen because I wanted to wait until after I fed the kids lunch. Just as we finished lunch the doorbell rang. It was our downstairs neighbors coming up for a visit. Now, in my head I had quite a list of things to do before they arrived, but in reality NOTHING in this country comes before guests. So I invited them in, and we visited for 3 hours!

Once the mother, grandmother, and baby left (the fourth grader stayed to play) I surveyed the damage. Oh those kids!!! They can reverse a hard days work in a wink! So out the mop comes, and I am back to work. Hopefully I handled the visit with grace and joy even if my mind was preoccupied!!!

Photo Shoot

My mom asked for pictures of the kids for her birthday. The pictures that she had in frames were a bit dated! Since I wasn't too pleased with our last photo shoot I decided to take the pictures myself.

We bought new clothes and headed over to a local park known for its beautiful flowers and natural settings. Here's what I ended up with:

The End of Mother's Day

Ok... sorry that I have a jillion Mother's Day posts. I promise that this is the last one!

Callie's teacher this year was really into performances. They had 4 big ones throughout the year. At the beginning of the year each student paid a fee, and with that money they hired a special teacher to come weekly and teach the kids songs and dance moves.

The Mother's Day performance was 2 1/2 hours long and included 5 costume changes!!! Needless to say, it was quite an event!

More Mother's Day

Could this child be any cuter?

Callie is really into baking and helping out in the kitchen. So, she insisted on baking me a cake for Mother's Day. The actual day was so full, so she had to settle for baking me a "Day After Mother's Day Cake." Daddy only helped a tiny bit. She did a great job!

Finally...

Only two months later, here's my Mother's Day story...

My dear sweet husband gave me the choice to do anything that I wanted for Mother's Day. I wanted us to spend the day together as a family, so I needed to choose something that the kids would enjoy, too. It would cut out on the whining and grumping! So we looked on the internet and our guide books and decided on a neat park that has scale miniatures of all of the country's famous natural wonders, mosques, and other famous buildings. We had heard that it was a fun family place.

The first bit of our journey was a special treat- a taxi ride (we always take the bus) to the pier. Then we got on a ferry to go up the waterway. I LOVE being on the water. It is so soothing!

Callie posing on the ferry.

Noah wanted his picture taken, too. I cannot believe that I have been a mother for 8 years!

Legend has it that the first flight took place from this tower hundreds of years ago. A man made wing-like contraptions and it is said that he was able to completely cross the waterway over to our continent!

More scenery

Adorable scenery!

After we worked our way through all of the stops to the end of the ferry line we disembarked. From our maps it didn't look like the park was very far from the last ferry stop. We headed to the sidewalk along the coast to walk the rest of the way. But, once we got down by the water we saw that the sidewalk ended just a short way up the coast. So we turned around to go on the sidewalk by the road. A man asked us if we were headed to the park. When we said yes, he directed us back down toward the water and assured us that that was the way to go. Then he called an old man over and shouted into his ear the name of the park where we were headed. He took us down to perhaps the first dock ever placed on water- it was ancient. We had to climb down off the sidewalk, over some rocks, and pray to God as we stepped onto this dock. And the boats made the dock look fancy!! Justin and I exchanged glances, and for some crazy reason decided to do it. To be honest, I absolutely cannot tell you why on earth I agreed to get on that boat. But it turned out to be my favorite part of the day.

Looks inviting doesn't it? Who needs a cruise when you've got this?

And we're off...

Our lives were in this guy's hands. We were going along just fine- albeit loudly. After a bit Justin said, "Well, I know why this guy can't hear anymore!" At one point we looked back and he was putting on a life jacket. Did we have life jackets? NO! This was a little, um... interesting! After we went along a bit and didn't sink we figured he just put it on for warmth. About halfway through our journey we ran out of gas! Luckily the old man pulled out a coke bottle full of gas, filled her up, and we were puttering along again. We made it the rest of the way to a tiny little dock right next to the park without any more hitches.

We got to the park and had a blast! Here is Callie Cutie on the the trampoline.

The kids posing on a miniature bridge. There are two huge ones in this city that span the continents.

Lucy's favorite part of the day- the train ride.

A perfect day always ends with ice cream!

Little lady

Have I told you that this child is trouble?

She is trouble!

God is good...

all the time!

We ended the day by taking a ferry, a bus, and then a minibus over to pick up pizza. We actually have Papa John's Pizza here. Two in the whole city! It is fantastic! The sausage and pepperoni that they use is the closest thing to pork that we can find. The pizza is yumm-O! So it was a major good day!

Thank you, Lord for your abundance! Being a mom is the hardest thing I have ever done, and it never stops. It is constant and all encompassing. But it is without a doubt what makes life worth living. I cannot imagine what life was like before these monkeys came into it. They are so fun and smart and beautiful. Life is a thousand times better with them. And of course, the amazing man that I married 12 years ago who parents alongside me. I love this little family more than words can express!!!
