Things Overheard at the Modern Art Museum
Um... what's the art in this room?
Is that art?
What is that?
I think I can make that.
I don't get it.
Are those bullet holes?
How do you think they did that?
So... the balloons are holding up the piano, right?
Where's the room with the ceiling made of books?
Don't touch it!!
Can we go now?
Look, out the window is a huge cruise ship! It's got a water-slide! Can we go tour that next?
I like cruise ships!
Can I have a snack?

The Art Museum
Tomorrow is our country's independence day so today Noah and Callie had a half day at school. Actually, they always have a half day. But, instead of going from 12:45 to 5:45 they went from 10:00 to 12:30.
All around our city there are advertisements for this exhibit, and I really wanted to see it. I looked up the museum and found out that Thursdays were free. So I made a plan for a delightful afternoon of exploration and culture with my older kids at the museum... of modern art.
Um... yeah, modern art is weird!!
It is our rainy season, so the three of us headed out in what felt like a freezing monsoon! We took two minibuses, a boat, and a tram to get to the museum. As we entered I noticed that everyone is in line and paying. Turns out that this exhibit is not free, but the rest of the museum is. I really wanted to see the exhibit so I payed for us.
Have you seen or heard of Body Worlds? It is simultaneously disgusting and fascinating. Noah has just started to learn all about the body in science, so this was interesting to him. Actually each of us was very interested if not sometimes scandalized by the things we saw.
I got the chance to go around with the kids and explain how God made them and what different parts of their bodies do. I was surprised by how interested they were. They did not hurry or pass by a single thing. I was fascinated about how intricate the systems of our bodies are.
Truly, the Lord is a master creator!
After the exhibit, we were off to explore the rest of the museum. Yes, it was free. And I am so glad. I am sorry. I try to appreciate things even if they aren't exactly my style, but seriously?
Seriously?
How can some of that stuff be called art?
My favorite was a huge white room with a cluster of clear beach-balls suspended in the middle. The cluster had thin black ropes jutting out from every angle anchored throughout the room. It looked like in the movies when rooms have those cool laser security systems going every which way. I am pretty sure Callie has never seen that in the movies, but she was inspired. She wiggled, wound, and crawled her way around the object and its ropes. She has a career in espionage ahead of her should she choose that path!
We also liked (not sure that's the right word) a weird seven minute video where two chuckleheads from way out east in our country acted out Don Quixote. I don't know if it was a comedy, but we sure did laugh. A lot!!
It was all so confusing but interesting.... and FREE! So, there's that! If I had had to pay admission into the museum I may not have had such a good time.
With the freezing rain still pouring we headed home. Of course, we were obligated by the fact that we hold American passports to stop in when we walked passed a Starbucks and have some hot chocolate to warm our souls!
It was a good day!

Things I Like
I need a major attitude adjustment today. So I decided to make a list of things that I like about our country of service:
1. The food is good.
2. Chocolate is plentiful.
3. Children are cherished.
4. The elderly are respected, listened to, and taken care of.
5. Every day feels like an adventure.
6. People hole higher value than work or things.
7. Community is essential.
8. The landscape is diverse- beautiful beaches, lush mountains, scrappy deserts
9. I can wear jeans.
10. Public transportation is plentiful.
11. The history of the world can basically be found here.
12. People make due with less.
13. Boys play soccer in the street all day.
14. People dress as nicely as they can.
15. Guests are a blessing.
16. They are great storytellers.
17. I can get the butcher to prepare the meat I am buying however I want for no additional cost- i.e. cubed chicken breast, ground beef, boneless chicken thighs
18. Neighbors often send over a plate of whatever treat they are making. I return the plate with treats the next time I bake.
19. When I need a taste of America McDonald's, Burger King, Domino's Pizza, Starbucks, and KFC are here.
20. Drinking tea with someone is a great way to pass the time.
21. They love to laugh.
22. Learning new things keeps your mind young.
23. My kids are growing up bilingual.
24. We get to help people daily.
25. God loves these people.
"Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

Lucy's Birthday Post #3
The Finale
After Lucy's school party we came home and waited for Justin, Noah, and Callie to arrive. Then we walked up to McDonald's as requested by Lucy. We met her sweet friend and had dinner together.
Two things in life never change: Jesus and McDonald's.
After we ate we took all the kids over to an indoor playground sort of thing. They played for almost and hour. Then we walked home and had birthday cake. It was so good!! Then I took Lucy's friend home in a taxi while Justin put the kids to bed.
Lucy had a great birthday!
Power Trip
Lucy has been on quite the power trip since turning 4. The other day Noah and Callie were watching tv and not paying Lucy enough attention. She marched into the room, turned off the tv, and said, "Listen to me. I am in charge here and you need to play with me!!" You can imagine how that went over!
A little while later she brought down her baby dolls and laid them all out on my bed. Once she had positioned each one just like she wanted it she said to me, "These are my babies. I am in charge of them. If you want to play with them you have to ask me."
Well, ok then! As you wish master!
Today I told her to get dressed. She said, "No! I am in charge of getting dressed and I am not going to do it right now."
Sweet mercy! Do you spank or laugh?
Or, laugh while spanking?

Lucy's Birthday Post #2
Um... so tomorrow turned into Monday. Sorry!
(Just to warn you there are a LOT of pictures to follow. I am trying to become a better photographer and that entails taking lots of pictures.)
I went to Lucy's school to lead the class in a few games. I had asked the teacher if I could (don't ask me why), but as it was approaching I was getting so nervous. Once things got going I was fine (albeit sweaty!).
Her school is just so cute. The teachers love the kids and they are always doing the most creative things.
After cake time we played the drop the clothespins in the jar game. I didn't get any pictures because I was surrounded- rather tightly- by small children! Then we went down to the play room and the teacher did a puppet show for the kids. I was amazed at how much they loved something so simple!!

We started with pin the tail on the donkey. Justin drew and colored that Eeyore. Isn't it beautiful! He also made cute little tails for all of the kids. I was wanting to have the kids color and cut out their own tails, but time didn't allow (plus, I think the teacher is afraid to let the kids use scissors!!). So the assistant, teacher, and I quickly cut them out. Then I explained the game to the kids. I was proud of myself because it seemed like they all understood me! Next Lucy demonstrated.
After a few minutes the assistant couldn't handle it anymore. She had to help the kids get it in the right spot. Neither the teacher or assistant would let the kids stick it where they actually tried to. I still kept spinning them around several times, though!
After the tails were all pinned on Eeyore it was time for cake. I ordered Lucy's cake from a local bakery. She picked out Cinderella. It was a beautiful cake!
