Off to the mountains with my family, parents, brothers, sisters-in-law, niece, and nephew!
Life doesn't get any better than this!!!

A Busy Few Days
We arrived at my parents' house Tuesday morning at 2 a.m. after 25 hours of travel. We were all exhausted, but so glad to finally be here! The kids did so well. They are becoming such good little travelers!
Tuesday we couldn't really sleep in. By the time we woke up at 8 our bodies were sure it was 3 o'clock in the afternoon! We slowly and groggily tried to get ourselves together. Mom took Justin and the girls to pick up our rental van. I got everything unpacked.
My brothers, sister-in-law Michelle, niece, and nephew all came over for lunch. It was so fun to see them. The kids were so happy to get some time to play with their cousins.
After they all left, Justin, Callie, and I went to our very favorite place... the WALMARTS!
It was bliss. I was very proud of myself, because the Walmarts did not have the same pull it did on me last year.
Growth is good!
We dropped by Justin's parents house on the way home to say hello. It was really good to see them!
After a super yummy dinner (my mom fixed all of my favorites) we took the kids to the pool for a quick dip. Basically I was trying to keep them awake for a little bit longer. We all came home and crashed.
Unfortunately, the kids woke up super early on Wednesday morning. My mom made them breakfast. (Bless her heart for dealing with them in the early mornings so we can sleep!) Later on we met my brother Alan and his family at our local water park. We spent the day standing a little too close to strangers in our bathing suits and tattoo watching.
It was fun!
Wednesday night we ate dinner with Justin's folks. Pizza!! They have a new puppy and the kids were wild about her! We had such a nice time together.
Today, the kids woke up early again. Justin had to go into his company's Atlanta office, so he was gone all morning. The kids put together like 20 puzzles. I took a shower and got some laundry done...
Congratulations to me!
Justin came home just in time for lunch and we all ate together. Then Justin took the girls on a few errands. Otherwise, we basically just relaxed today.
It feels like we are getting into the swing of being here. Hopefully the kids will sleep in to at least 8 am and the fog over my brain will lift!!

Sunday Sneak Peek
Two things about this picture:
1. It is so hot that laundry dries REALLY quickly.
2. It is so hot that people cannot stay inside. Every evening just as the sun starts to set behind the buildings, everyone sits out on their balconies, patios, or in our neighbors' case, parking lots, talking about how hot it is and drinking (hot) tea.

The Hunger Diet
I am not the biggest fan of leftovers. Justin is hardly a fan at all. And the kids are hit and miss with just about anything.
So, these past few days have been pretty slim pickin's around our house! I am trying to not buy any more food and get our fridge and freezer cleaned out before we leave on Monday. Top that off with the fact that it is way too hot to turn the oven on, and you end up with some interesting meal selections.
Last night frozen grilled burgers from 4th of July- not too bad- with a side of three day old noodles and/or some crackers. For dessert... slightly rotten fruit!
Tonight, it's left over party food from my friend's twin's birthday party. For dessert- slightly more rotten fruit!
Tomorrow night, I have 6 meatballs, a leg of lamb (literally), about a serving of frozen french fries, 1/2 cup of blueberries, parsley and dill in the freezer, and 4 eggs, some yogurt, potatoes, onions, ketchup and mayo in the fridge. If that's not yummy enough, I've also got some nuts and lentils in the cupboard. And, of course, for dessert, very rotten fruit!
After that, the selection gets REALLY bad!

Who's CRAZY Now?
I called our favorite dentist in KY to make appointments for the kids to get their teeth cleaned. The very nice lady let me choose a date. I said, "July 8th in the afternoon or July 9th in the morning."
To which she replied, "I have August 8th at 2 pm."
In my Lady, did you hear me voice, "Um... so you don't have July 8th or 9th?"
Patiently, "Ma'am, those dates have already passed."
"Oh! Ok, I'm crazy! I'll take that 2 o'clock on August 8th."

Ladies, Don't Talk to the Bearded Guy!
Women here keep their homes spic-and-span. They typically clean their flat almost daily, wash their windows at least every other week, and wash their drapes every few months. They wash their carpets about twice a year. A few do it themselves, but anymore everyone sends the carpets out to be washed. It's not too expensive and the companies pick up and deliver the carpets.
That little bit of background information brings us to yesterday.
I am having a lady come in while we are gone to do a major deep cleaning. So, before we fly out on Monday, everything in this flat needs to be picked up, organized, and stored away so that it does not get dusty or in the cleaning lady's way.
I am washing all our rugs myself, and rolling them up to be stored. Since I can't do the carpets myself, I had arranged to have my carpets cleaned.
The guys came yesterday to get the carpets (6!). Noah was headed back outside to play as they pulled up in their van. When I saw them, I made Noah stay inside with me. They looked VERY religious. It is not appropriate for women to be alone in the house with any man other then her husband, even workmen.
To avoid gossip, when a workman comes, either a neighbor lady pops by for a bit, and/or women leave the front door standing open.
When I saw these guys I wanted to make sure that they were not uncomfortable coming to my flat- especially because I am foreign (aka- loose). So I made Noah stay inside for a bit.
It was so interesting because Noah has really learned how to handle these situations. He's like a little gentleman and takes care of everything. The men basically only spoke to him. They even filled out the order ticket with his name on it!
HA! Maybe I should let they try to squeeze the payment out of Noah, too!
It's the little cultural nuances like this that feel like they'll take a lifetime to learn.

Bed Stuff
My sweet neighbor, the mom of my friend who is getting married, has 4 kids. Her son has worked on a ship, and therefore been out of the country for about 5 years.
He came home Sunday for his little sister's wedding.
My neighbor, the mom, was so excited that her son was coming home that she bought a brand new bed for him to sleep on.
She is 58 years old and has never in her life owned a bed!!
Many people here sleep on a couch/futon sort of thing- especially kids. Noah and Callie are the only ones of their friends who have their own beds!

We'll land in America at this time next week!
SQUEALLL!!!
We'll only be there for a few weeks of vacation.
I haven't lost the weight I gained in America last summer. But, that's a problem for another day. I can't be bothered by those sort of things while I'm busy enjoying the deliciousness of things like Chic-Fil-A and Mexican food.
Oh, American food... we dream about you at night. We talk about you during the day. At last we will be together again!
Here's my dream grocery list:
Cheetos
Dr. Pepper
Turkey
Colby-Jack Cheese
Cool Ranch Doritos
Sweet Potatoes
Peanut butter
Wheat Thins
Cookie Dough
Moose Tracks Ice Cream
Asparagus
Plain M & Ms
Peanut Butter M & Ms
Butterfingers
Sausage
Bacon
Here's the places where I hope to eat:
Chic-Fil-A
Dairy Queen- I hear there is a triple chocoholic blizzard with my name on it!!
Ramsey's (in KY)
La Parilla
Wendy's
McAllister's Deli
Gabriel's
Cracker Barrel
Good Grief! I'm gonna need some elastic waist clothes! HA!!

Par-Tay Time
I have been a busy girl this weekend. I have just goofed off to my heart's content!
Saturday late morning Callie and I went dress shopping. I wanted to find a pretty dress to wear to my friend's wedding. Callie has turned into such a great little shopper/stylist. (When I told my mom this she was shocked because shopping with Callie used to be the worst possible torture I could imagine- well... next to taking Callie for a blood draw. I'd suppressed all of those shopping nightmares and pray that we are on the other side of that cold dark crevasse!)
(I like to add "helpful" information to my stories by making use of parentheses.)
(Lots and lots of parentheses.)
So, anyhow, we shopped around, found a cute dress, a purse to match, and had lunch. It was the perfect date with my girl.
On the way home we stopped by Nuray and Mahmut's flat to help a bit. That's when I got to make her bed.
Then we went to the salon. My tribulations at the salon have been well documented. What I think I have forgotten to tell you is the fantastic thing about the salon.
You see, bathing is not an everyday sport here and hair washing is about a weekly event. (I, too, have started washing my hair less and less. It is healthier than ever. So don't gross out.) Lots of women go to the salon to get their hair washed and styled. Ironically, just like our grandmothers did every week- shampoo and set. Except, minus the little pink curlers and hair-dryer globe. It only costs me 5 lira (about $3) and I LOVE how they style my hair. So about once a month, I treat myself to a style.
The style was completely necessary because I was headed out to paint the town red with my (foreign) girlfriends. My three dear friends and I went down to the fancy part of town. They treated me to dinner at a really yummy italian place and then to a progressive dessert sort of thing. Don't judge, we did walk from each dessert place to the next! HA!
All in all, it was such a fantastic evening. I love these girls, and it is so nice to just escape a bit and laugh together!
Sunday morning I was up and at 'em, ready for my communal bathing experience. Yall, I promise you that this is one of the best things about this city. Sure, it is very awkward for the first minute or two. But you get over it really quickly because of all the relaxation and goodness- sort of like a massage.
Again, I had so much fun with these friends. They are so fun and so dear to me. My friend Nuray, the bride, had never been to the hamam before. So it was fun to walk her through it. She has been so stressed trying to get everything ready for her wedding this coming weekend. It was obvious how much more relaxed she was when we left.
Deep sigh of happiness for communal bathing.
We went home and Justin- my AWESOME husband- had the house perfectly in order. He had done laundry, cleaned out the dryer vent, washed our (extremely yucky) fan, and taken care of the kids. He is such a good man!!
We went down to visit our friends (Nuray's family) because her brother had come in town for the wedding. He lives in Ireland and has only been home one weekend in 5 years! Needless to say everyone was so excited to see him. It was fun to meet him and hear him speak English with a strong Irish accent!
We came home and Justin and I got ready for our big date. Justin had bought me concert tickets for my birthday (yes, we are still celebrating 5 days later!) We went to dinner at a yummy restaurant and then to the amphitheatre to see this country's equivalent of Barbara Streisand. It was amazing. It does not get any better than sitting next to my man under the stars, with a light breeze, listening to an incredible singer accompanied by a huge live band.
Perfect night.
Today, I have 4 baskets of laundry and some precious kids to attend to. Life is back on track. But it was fun to par-tay all weekend!! Maybe middle-age won't be so bad!!

This Should Be Interesting
Yall, I am going here today. I've been once before. It was with a foreign friend who had been before. So, she talked me through the whole thing. After the first few awkward minutes it's really not so bad. And in the end it turns out to be downright luxurious.
But, it's those first few minutes that I am worried about.
It's always real weird to be naked around folks... especially for the first time.
I am going with my local friends, so I don't know what will be "normal" for them. I expect a lot of poking and prodding. A lot of comparing of body parts in matter-of-fact ways. Wishing we were skinnier while eating too much food.
My dear friend is getting married next weekend. This is sort of the local equivalent to a bachelorette party, I think. A bunch of girls sitting around naked, talking non-stop and scrubbing the snot out of each other.
This should be very interesting!
There will be no pictures, but by tonight, I may have an interesting story or two to share!

Pray for Nuray
One of my dearest friends is getting married next Saturday. Today was the day they moved all the things that they have been collecting for her to the new flat.
The bride's side is responsible for providing everything for the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.
Each and every box, package, bag, etc. was tied with a red ribbon for good luck and happiness. Although I am happy for her, I am sad that she is moving.
Callie and I dropped by to help for a bit. I got to make up their new bed. They ask someone who is happily married to make up the bed for the first time. It is supposed to bring good luck to the new couple. I was really honored that I got to do it. As I spread out the sheet, tucked the corners, smoothed the quilt, and fluffed the pillows I prayed for these sweet friends- for unity in their marriage, and for joy and blessings.
Would you join me in praying for the Lord to work in and bless Nuray and Mahmut's marriage?

My Birthday
Tuesday was my 34th birthday. Every year when my birthday comes around I go a bit crazy. It's one part not loving the fact that I am getting older and one part not loving the fact that the world doesn't stop and celebrate me.
I know, crazy, right. Getting older is better than the alternative, as my dad always says.
But this year was a really good birthday once it actually happened. The night before, I kept probing Justin for information. Did you make any plans? Are we doing anything special? He kept answering "no," so I was about ready to push him off the balcony.
I made it clear to all involved that since my husband had made no special plans for me, I was taking my kids to the beach. I went across the street to visit my friends and see if they could come. They were so excited. We made our plans for a great day.
When I came home I started getting a few things ready for our beach day. Justin then says that he decided to take the day off from work and go with us.
NOPE!
I had just invited my friends (women, obviously) so culturally, Justin could not come with us to the beach. You snooze you lose!
I woke up on Tuesday morning to the sound of very excited giggles from the kids. They had been checking on me every three seconds to see if I was awake. So, when I opened my eyes, they were through the roof.
Justin had gotten up early and he and the girls were putting together a really nice breakfast for me. It was so lovely. The kids couldn't wait, so first I got to open my presents. The kids [Justin] had gotten me some really nice pots that I had been wanting. My mom sent me a cute outfit. Callie had made me the cutest penguin earring holder. She had found the pattern in her Highlights magazine (thanks, Mom, for the subscription!) and had been saving it for my birthday. Noah made a big drawing on a poster. They were so sweet and proud of themselves. Justin also got tickets to a concert and arranged for our friends to watch the kids this coming Sunday. So exciting! I can't wait!
After the wonderful gifts, we ate our breakfast. I love to have a big nice breakfast. It feels like such a luxury because ordinarily I never even eat breakfast.
Justin left for work.
Then we got ourselves together and went to the beach. The weather was perfect- hot and sunny. We tried out a new beach just down from the one we've gone to a bit this summer. It was really nice.
We got home at about 5:30- tired, sunburned, and happy. We all had a quick shower, and then Justin arrived home. We didn't have dinner plans. We were tired and sort-of wanted to order in. But I knew that once the food came I would be sad that it was my birthday and I was eating pizza or some other yucky fast food.
So, I made Justin take us out to a nice restaurant. It was perfect. We sat in on the back patio. Even though it was a really nice restaurant, there was a fun place for the kids to play. The food was really good, the kids were happy, and I was happy.
Our neighbors from across the street had asked us to go out for tea that night. We had all had such a full day so I had Justin ask them if they would just come over for tea. But, they were pretty insistent on going out.
Since the kids had done so well at dinner we were all feeling up to going out. We picked up our friends (9 people in our hatchback-style car!!) and headed out for tea.
When we arrived at the tea-garden I was so surprised. They had reserved a special table and it was decorated with rose petals. The view out over the city, the bridge, and the water was stunning. There was live music.
Sidenote: Noah and Callie take guitar lessons. They LOVED watching the guys play their guitars. It was so cute!
I felt so loved and special. Our friends ordered food and tea. Much to our kids' delight, they let them order refills (not free, so our kids never get refills!) when they finished their lemonade.
Justin was happy because he got to smoke the hookah pipe.
The waiter brought me a cake with special fireworks. (I think the awning caught on fire because there was a little scramble. But I couldn't see it that well, and they played it cool.) The cake had an elaborate flower-shaped candle that shot sparks and then opened up and had candles on each petal. It rotated and played the Happy Birthday tune.
AMAZING!
We don't have enough pyrotechnics in American birthdays.
We got home at almost midnight. Such a fun day!

The Heat is On
Well, just like I knew it would, the heat has come to dwell in the city. Just to be really honest, it is not nearly as hot as it has been the past few summers... yet! I am praying that it doesn't get that hot!
But every year, the uncomfortableness of the heat catches me by surprise. The embarrassing sweat rolling down my... um... well, my everything! It is not fun.
I am a total wimp when it comes to being hot. I just don't like it. And now it's here. And I can't sleep.
Whaaaaaa!

The Good News...
Justin is home from London safe and sound.
The bad news...
Security made him throw away four brand new jars of peanut butter from his carry-on.

It's HOT here!
Does anybody have any tasty cool summer recipes they'd like to share so I don't melt in my kitchen?!

Let's Get Physical
Tuesday I had to endure life's worst physical torture take my kids for physicals. Now, after four years of living here I have learned a few things. I was so proud of myself for taking them to a small local government-subsidized clinic instead of scheduling an appointment with their (private) pediatrician. I was feeling so proud of myself for thinking of this. What a fantastic steward of our family's money I am.
Well... pride doth come before the fall....
I get to the clinic and talk to the receptionist about our reason for visiting, etc. She informs me that the kids will not only the the urine tests that I anticipated. But, they will also need blood tests.
FANTASTIC!! My heart stopped beating for a few minutes.
I pay the money, get the lab slips, and we head down the hall to the lab. And so begins a time where I may have lost my religion.
Things aren't so private here. So as we walk into the lab to hand in our slips, they are doing a blood draw from a boy about Callie's age. Now, this kid did great- not even a peep. But, Callie took one look at that situation and began to lose it!
You've seen that movie Carrie. It was a little bit like that.
Not pretty!! There was weeping and gnashing of teeth involved.
The lady at the desk handed me the lovely little pee cups and asked for a sample first (giving Callie even more time to get herself worked up).
Praise the Lord, Noah was very confident that he could handle it himself. He did pretty well. Callie, also much to my surprise and delight, said she could handle it herself. She also did pretty well. Only a very minor clean-up needed.
Then there's Lucy...
First off, she can't pee in a squatty potty all by herself yet. So, we squeeze into the tiny booth together. I take off all her clothes (trust me, this is completely necessary) and get her all set up. I am straddling the squatty potty. She is squatting between my legs gripping my thighs for dear life. I am bending over, holding the blessed cup for her to pee in- knowing full well her aim will not be accurate.
Why did no one tell me that moms have to do this sort of stuff before I birthed these three children?
Thanks a lot, friends!
And we wait, and wait, and wait. The pee-pees aren't coming. We take a breather and then reassume the pee-collection position. Still no pee.
I get the child dressed, we wash our hands, and we exit the bathroom. I knew that urine tests would be involved, so smart mom that I am, I brought water bottles for the kids. I sit Lucy down and command her to drink (perhaps in the voice of Satan). I am not proud of this.
Callie had taken off and was sitting as far away from the lab as possible, tears rolling down her cheeks, talking to herself. Random people were coming up to her and trying to comfort her.
Yes, we made quite the scene.
I look at Noah and say, I don't care how bad it hurts, you go in there, take it like a man, and come out all smiles. My eyes may have been glowing fire-red. I was afraid to look in a mirror at this point.
Noah did just that. He assured everyone in earshot, including Callie whom I had summoned, that it was sort of fun!
Well- trained boy!!
All eyes turned to Callie. Now, as I dragged her (literally) to the chair (she would not sit in it) a woman sitting right across from Noah sort of had a seizure and fainted. I casually stepped into Callie's line of sight to block her from seeing this and getting more crazy. And, as all the lab staff rushed to help the woman, Callie, blind with fear, and I had a little come to Jesus meeting about how she would be getting the blood draw no matter what.
The clinic staff wisked the woman off to who-knows-where and the lab staff returned. One other technician came over to help the nurse doing the blood-draw. We forced Callie into the chair. She went so nuts at the tourniquet that the staff backed off. They said, "she is so strong!!" I think Callie horse-kicked one of them in the shin!
So, then they made me sit in the chair and hold Callie down. I had to wrap my legs around hers, cross her free arm over her chest, and hold her in a bear-hug. Four other nurses had to help me hold her down. When she started screaming I had to cover her mouth with my hand. After it was over she completely chilled out and was like it wasn't so bad.
Thanks, darling daughter!!
The sweat was pouring down my face and steam was coming out of my ears. The nurses were trying to to be nice, but I know they wanted to stick needles straight into our foreheads!
Thanks to Callie's fine performance, Lucy was a little freaked out. The nurse had a hard time finding her vein bur eventually got it. Poor little Lucy cried a little bit, but did her best to be brave.
After Lucy's trauma, it was time for my trauma.
Lucy had decided that she was ready to go pee-pee. So we assumed the pee-collection position. Lucy proceeded to pee all over my hands as I was desperately trying to catch it with the cup.
Not my favorite part of the day.
So, anyhow, when the lab-work was complete it was time to see the doctor. He was very nice, and very interested in the three little American kids sitting in his office. He said that to do a full physical, he needed the lab results first.
They needed an hour to process. But he assured us that he was there till six, so no hurry. The kids and I went to grab an early lunch. After about an hour we came back. The good news was that the lab results were back. The bad news was that the doctor was at lunch.
We waited for him. He came back and pronounced the kids completely healthy.
Hooray, now they can swim!
Oh... did I not tell you the reason for this whole trauma?
The kids are going to go to the swimming pool with Lucy's preschool...
three times.
Yep! You read that correctly (if, in fact you are still reading this long drawn out story).
THREE TIMES!!!
All that hassle for just a few trips to the swimming pool! Can you believe it?

July 4th!
It's Independence Day!!!
I always have to try at least three times before I am able to spell independence correctly. Ironically, I am teaching my kids to spell this summer. HA!
Anyhow, we usually sort of forget about Independence Day, but this year I am on top of things! I'm having a tiny get-together with some American friends to celebrate.
Justin and the kids bought me a grill for Mother's Day. So we are going to grill hamburgers. I even have some cheddar cheese that I brought back from London. I have diligently saved it in the freezer for this very occasion!
Faint from joy!!
The only bad news is that I still do not have a gun. So, I have nothing to fire off into the air in celebration.
Next year!?
I am more appreciative than ever for The United States of America. Our country may not be perfect. But, I have experienced first hand just what a treasure freedom is. And am so grateful for the brave men and women who volunteer (military service is mandatory for men here) to put their lives on the line to protect our way of life. Several of my very close relatives have served our country in war and peacetimes. I am so proud of them! And I am proud to be an American.
God Bless the USA!!!

Calgon Take Me AWAY!!!
Cleaning the flat with the kids hovering around [read: messing up what I just cleaned] is like trying to dig a grave...
in the winter...
in Alaska...
with a sand shovel!
They follow behind me and immediately undo what I have done. Their little "clean-sensors" are spot on. The kitchen floor was barely dry from being mopped before we had our first spill. The linens on my bed were perfectly straight and crisp when suddenly it became the perfect place for wrestle-mania.
I'm searching online for some type of caging device!
Or, maybe, I'll give up on cleaning!

Beach Day
Today is beach day!!
Justin is on his way to London for work, and I am taking my sweet babies to the beach for some R & R... and FUN!!
Everybody's gonna sleep well tonight!!
Praise the Lord, we discovered that when we're not on public transportation, the beach is only 35 minutes away. This could be the best summer ever!!

Something so Simple
...gone so wrong!!
A few months ago I asked my mom to send the kids some sidewalk chalk in the next package. Sure enough, she did. The kids were thrilled.
Our neighbors were not!!!
They had never seen something like sidewalk chalk and have gotten so mad that my heathen children would "paint" up the parking area next to our building! They just can't understand that it's not permanent. I guess we'll have to wait for some rain to fully explain the magic of sidewalk chalk.
Major fail!
